(Not the band)
A common folklore/fairy tale motif, common world-wide, in which an unsuspecting traveler does a good turn for what turns out to be a spirit, who then finds a way to repay him/her.

It's been a while since I've done any reading on the subject, and - to be frank, it's not something that comes up in day to day conversation. Not in Canada, anyways.
So - a bit of research down obscure rabbit-holes, some curious books and grimoires indeed, and - magic of the internet - most of it is available online.
So, without further ado, to begin:
- Wiki on Demonology
- Wiki on The Pseudomonarchia Daemonum
- Wiki on The Classification of Demons
- Wiki on The Testament of Solomon
That's a start, and should keep you busy for a few days (or weeks). And, yes, with a very little bit of searching you can find the originals online and in translation...

I've always had an interest in unsolved mysteries. An armchair sleuth, or a desire to be puzzled, or simply being puzzled by the scant information provided, designed to titillate, prevaricate, confuse...
Searches, recently - Tania Murrell, disappeared - but, really, they know who did it. Rumours tie the now dead suspect to the Kevin Reimer case in Elk Island.
And this was followed by my childhood - the Moose Jaw Murder that shocked the town - Schepens was acquitted for it, largely due to police incompetence.
This thread on Reddit - Murders and disappearances in which the perpetrator is clearly known, yet not enough evidence has been collected to bring them to trial:
- Disappearances of Terrance Williams and Felipe Santos
- Disappearance of Susan Powell
- Disappearance of Patricia Adkins
- Disappearance of Natalee Holloway
- Police Seargeant Drew Peterson
- Cleveland Torso Murderer
- The Doodler
- Disappearance of Lauren Spierer
- Disappearance of Rebecca Coriam
- Dupont de Ligonnès murders and disappearance
There are countless more, and those people who committed the offenses are free and among us. More than a few in Calgary.
The details of many of these are maddening - the Williams/Santos & Adkins one especially - no doubt as to who is the perpetrator, but never any charges. Not surprisingly, the police are well represented in the above list - and not always as the investigators.
And, finally not to leave you completely in the dark, the cautionary tale of Ken McElroy: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ken_McElroy. Which confirms the notion that if you want justice, you very often have to do it yourself.

WTF
Like many of my projects I start this with the best intentions. Like "I'll update this daily" or "I'd probably be a good parent" or "One more glass of wine, why not, I'm sure I can drive us home..." or "This won't hurt a bit....".
We all know how that story ends. Anyways, as they come to me....
