Sometimes I wonder how I end up watching these films.
This, the story of a disaffected schoolteacher who takes his summer leave from Tiboonda to go fly to Sydney and visit his girlfriend. Only to get there he must first go through Bundanyabba - referred to affectionately by the locals as "The Yabba" - and here things go sideways. People perpetually buying him beers, a constable introduces him to the "underground nightlife" - people betting on a coin flip, his winning of a fortune and then losing it, falling in with considerable alcoholics who take him under their wing, buying him drinks, beers, keeping him loaded while they get up to all sorts of vicious misadventures, a day and nighttime Kangaroo hunt, real footage, real kangaroos being serially slaughtered, a nightmare of drunken hospitality that never ends, more drinks, fights, and it continues, pulling you down with it.
The outback, Tiboonda, it looks to be hell. The hopelessness, poverty, despair, the glaring heat and sun, the lack of shade. And the turning on it's head of what at first glance appears to be hospitality, the drinking and macho culture, there's a lot going on.
An excellent movie, but an uncomfortable watch.
