Inspired by "Midnight In Paris" I've tracked down a masterpiece from the 20's - Fritz Lang's Metropolis.
Now I know that - to modern tastes- it's overacted, a little extreme, but look at the effects - the theme, the facial expressions -all this for the 1920's!
It is amazing. And if you can't read the German subtitles, well, it doesn't matter, the film explains (for this 10 minutes at least) itself. Marvelous.

Written and Directed by Woody Allen, starring Owen Wilson, a charming and romantic look at one writer's discovery of the Paris of his dreams and imagination. To give away more might be to spoil it, so simply - a light film, perfectly suited for that first date with the English or Arts major you've been dying to ask out.

Another IFN pick by the boy, mind you he had a limited selection - Forks Over Knives, The First Grader being the other choices.
Now it's part of the Sled Island independent music festival in Calgary, and the theme of the documentary is how the internet is changing peoples experience of music. Only marginally interesting, and nothing that you didn't know.
But what was interesting was the promised Q & A with the director at the end, wherein they propped a laptop up on a folding chair on the stage and the audience could converse with him vis-a-vie Skype. Positively surreal, but it got better with the questions - one particularly muscular and healthy young fellow wondering if "the democratization of music" should be seen as a good thing....
More books, less gym.

Tonight's documentary is the new Morgan Spurlock documentary on embedded advertising and product placement in films.
Now he's an amusing and sympathetic character/narrator, but as he makes the sponsorship deals to make this film his hands are slowly tied.
It's mildly entertaining, light, nothing you didn't know but well presented, the only criticism would be that the material was a little thin for a full length documentary, and despite the amusing product plugs and endorsements and awkward moments with potential clients - it - well, it seemed to lack pacing...
My opinion. Slightly amusing, but probably not worth going to see. That said, I'd buy all the products that assisted in the production of this if ONLY for the reason that it took some considerable balls and courage to get on board with Spurlock in a film that they should have intuitively known was damning of advertising in film. And sponsors included Mane & Tail human/equestrian shampoo, mini-cooper, and POM Wonderful, amongst others.

I grew tired of waiting for it to come and so downloaded it for the boy and I to watch.
Excellent, brilliant ideas, and whether you agree with it or not there's much food for thought. A shame we couldn't see it in the theater....
