Window Dressing

They were filming a movie here - across the street in an alley - a couple of weeks ago. Lots of vans, booms, lighting, people gathered, actors, extras, pedestrians just watching.
It went on a couple of days.
And - the last couple of weeks they've been window dressing the building next to the Cambie - "The Tongue and Tail", making it into a fictional butcher shop. They've put decals on the windows, cleaned up and retiled the inside, brought in coolers, fridges, painted the butcher's signage on the building next to the alley - finally, now, they've filled the window with choice cuts of plastic molded to resemble meat - sides of beef, sausages, chickens, etc.
Every night, after work, there's security guarding the site - a "Teamsters" car parked out front, a security guard (or 2) on foot...
They've put more money into the "appearances" and the fiction of a butcher shop than most real butchers would put into a real butcher shop.
This is hilarious. And when the movie - or scene - is done shooting the building again will be vacant, junkies will shoot up in the doorway, use it as a toilet - but - for the moment - I'm living in a fictional gentrification of Gastown, an substantially upscaled neighborhood that will pass as a friendly neighborhood (or maybe not? I don't know what they're filming...) butcher - is this for a fleeting scene? Given the money spent on renovations I would expect a substantial portion of filming to be done here - maybe a new Canadian sitcom?
Wait and see...
**Update: Outside for a cigarette, street blocked off, booms and crew in place - looks like filming starts today. And I have to work a double and will miss it. Damn!!

I enjoyed, but a more obscure work by Calvino for a reason. Still, it's good to read an author "becoming", as opposed to an author who's "arrived".
Interesting, but not precious.
It provides me the much-needed reminder that Excellence is a process, not an end or result.

Now - I mean, there are still a staggering number of people that buy the "Wet Market" hypothesis, which while not exonerating China is a little more acceptable than the "Lab Leak" hypothesis.
But then there's this, Wilson Edwards, a "Swiss Biologist" invented by Chinese Social Media to disseminate lies and doubt about the politicization of Covid.
Links: BBC, NBC, The Guardian
Now how on earth can anyone trust anything China says about ANYTHING AT ALL? I MEAN - REALLY - if EVERYTHING you say is a LIE - then it follows if your LIPS ARE MOVING CHANCES ARE GOOD YOUR LYING!
This is not even the first or second time that China's tried this - there was previously the MAINE LOBSTER HYPOTHESIS (link) - in which China tried to pin the origins of Covid on Maine Lobsters. Or that it came out of Fort Detrick (link).
It is appalling that we - or any other first world nation - continue to have any traffic or commerce with them. It is overdue that we start choosing our friends based upon their good characters and reputations within the international community. And - some countries should have NO ACCESS TO THE INTERNET at all. We can't stop them from lying to their own people - but we can stop them lying to the world at large.
Much like a lot of our friends and relatives, some people don't have the requisite brains or education to be allowed to hold opinions, or trusted to vet every bit of disinformation they read. And I'm increasingly of a mind to think that Opinions are a Privilege that reasonably require you having done some hard research before entertaining.

And Daniel, at work, older fellow (late forties, perhaps?) - always in a suit - well dressed, overdressed even, had owned a few restaurants, sold them - and now was looking for work as a server - worked a few shifts - maybe 5, 6, took a couple of days off, sick, before coming in and working his last shift, quitting.
The stress, I suspect, he looked pretty harried, the staff here - bitchy, bitter cliques, heard a few scathing remarks about his plate carrying abilities, being an owner doesn't mean you can serve, or carry plates, or...
Anyways, he's off. 1 down. Another new girl trying out, pleasant again - but - saw her Friday night, she wasn't seen again on Saturday, this is a fairly frequent thing for them I suspect...
So - while I'll never hold a candle to the lifers here - and why should I? I got a LottoMax ticket - 65 Million will be mine tomorrow, and then you'd all better watch out...
