And this, another old one by Werner Herzog, again filmed in the Amazon basin, this time the story revolving around a would-be rubber Baron hauling his ship up the Amazon and over a mountain...
Starring Klaus Kinski, notoriously difficult to work with "favourite" of Werner Herzog, who had attempted to exclude him from this, only his first and second choices fell out. And so they end up together again, but for more on their relationship watch Herzog's "My Best Fiend"...
Anyways, I gave the briefest description of the plot, of course there is more; Herzog's far too brilliant to keep it simple. Very worthwhile.

So this, the 1853 account of Victorian Explorer Sir Richard Burton's trip to Meccah, worthy in that he had to go very undercover, learn the manner and customs of the Al-Islam, and filled with footnotes that expand upon the locals and peoples he visits, the various holy stops, the wells, the mountains, the various tribes they encounter, the history and anecdote of every place and people going all the way back to the Prophet Muhammed, their superstitions, battles, etc, etc.
And of course there's the pilgrimage, and it's curious to me how all these different tribes and nations are making the pilgrimage to the holiest of holies, yet seem overwhelming obliged to tribal differences, banditry, thieving, murder, etc.
It's like they read the book but didn't understand the message.
Or - wait a minute, look about the world at the moment, all the different books and religion, and almost 200 years later we haven't changed a bit, from Israel to almost every damned church in the USA.
Anyways, he's covered Al-Madinah and is close now to Meccah, he's good company. I'm looking forward to volume II.

So, doom scrolling the News the past few days - the War Criminal in chief launching strikes on Iran; targeting children's schools, hundreds of 7-12 year old children killed. Front page shows the 4 US soldiers killed in the illegal/war-crimes strikes.
The hundreds of children of course are irrelevant, they're the "others".
The President and his staff have gone - to quote Tropic Thunder - "Full Retard".
I hate to go against popular opinion but this isn't a war they're going to win.
You only need to look at History to realize that it's been a very long time since the US has won any war, Vietnam, Afghanistan, Iraq, countless others, they only kill innocent people and make life hell for survivors. They have no success stories. There will be no happy outcomes for them.
And - don't get me wrong, Iran needed a regime change, but it needs to do that itself. The reason they have the regime they do - is - surprise surprise a result of US meddling. In the 70's they were a thriving liberal democracy, but US destabilization made this regime possible.
Of course, the revelation that they're trying to hasten the Apocalypse to bring about the second coming of Jesus; well, that's just more nonsense fuel on the fire. Everything is a deflection from the impending elections, the Trump-Epstein Files, the ICE violence and violations. That's one thing they're doing right - it's just that's not what most people voted for.
Anyways, as Evil as the Iran Regime was we have sufficient proof now to more than make up our minds that Netanyahu/Trump alliance is going to be even worse. So put on your seatbelts, it's going to be a hell of a ride...
